Almost a quarter of homes in one Devon city are wasting heat, thereby adding to their energy bills, thermal images have revealed.

Hundreds of homes are leaking heat, and aerial survey has revealed, with 22 per cent of them turning up red on a heat loss map.

While these homes will be targeted first by advisors trying to help them reduce their energy waste and bills by installing insulation or double glazing, they are not the only homes that could be improved.

More than two thirds of homes (67 per cent) were found to have a medium heat loss value and would still reduce their energy use, costs and carbon footprint by installing more insulation.

Councillor Kevin Mitchell, Exeter City Council's lead councillor for environment and leisure, said: "There are a significant number of households in the city that are paying higher fuel bills than necessary due to poor insulation and we hope that the results of the survey will encourage them to insulate their property.

"There are a range of grants available for loft and cavity wall insulation for people on all incomes, including, for a limited period of time, free insulation for Exeter residents over 65 and for households on low incomes."

Last year Gordon Brown launched a scheme to offer all UK homes free or half price insulation.
