Scotland could become a European leader in electric vehicles, according to the Labour party.

Speaking at the party conference, John Park, Labour spokesman on economy and skills urged the Scottish government to invest in a green fleet of 1,000 electric vehicles.

He said that Glasgow-based Allied Vehiclesm which produces zero vehicle carbon emission cars, vans, minibuses and taxis, should be helped to become Europe's leading producer of vehicles.

"These clean, green vehicles are the outcome of three years of research and development by Allied Vehicles," said Mr Park..

"To make them a common sight on the High Street, the company need local authorities to invest in recharging stations and help from the SNP government.

"They have asked Ministers for £15 million which would create 100 green jobs in Glasgow. This would be an investment in Scotland's future."

Last year, the company announced that it would join companies such as Ford, Citroen, Nissan and Mercedes Benz in submitting a bid to provide demonstration electric vans to local authorities and organisations.
