Wind turbine to power half the computers at a school

A milestone wind turbine installed at a school will power half of its computers. The six kilowatt wind turbine set up at the Sheringham High School, is the 2,000th turbine from manufacturer Proven Energy to be installed.

Funds for the turbine were raised by the school's Eco Team, with some provided by the Big Lottery Fund and the governments Low Carbon Buildings Programme.

Eco Team member George Phillips said that the wind turbines daily capacity of 27 kilowatt hours would suffice to power half of the school's computers.

He added: "We've learnt a lot about the challenges of global warming in our lessons and it's really good to think that we will be producing our own renewable energy."

The Low Carbon Buildings Programme Phase Two, offers funding for public buildings to install microgeneration technology.

While it is set to close in June, it is hoped that above market payments for the electricity small-scale facilities generate will encourage homes and businesses to install the devices.
