ABB distribution boards return electrifying performance to converted Highbury stadium

ABB’s low voltage technology is helping to offer improved facilities and enhanced flexibility for the new residents of ‘The Stadium - Highbury Square’ – a collection of contemporary studios, one, two and three bedroom apartments set within the Art Deco surroundings of Arsenal Football Club’s old stadium - Highbury.

The former football stadium, currently being transformed into 711 high-specification studios, will be protected by ABB’s Housemaster consumer units, alongside three Protecta mains distribution boards, constructed to fulfill the requirements of electrical power transmission and distribution, as well as for control technology within the complex.

Working with one of the UK’s leading providers of building services, ABB Limited is helping to ensure the technology used within the build is designed for safety and reliability in electrical building installations. Each apartment will be equipped with an updated version of ABB’s Housemaster consumer unit, aimed at domestic and light commercial applications.

The consumer unit introduces a series of improved features, including increased cabling space and a comprehensive set of labels that cover the increasing variety of devices now controlled from the consumer unit. Set up with a 6+6 spilt load board, the consumer unit features a main isolating switch for essential circuits such as lighting, while other circuits in the complex are protected with Residual Current Devices (RCDs).

Other devices within the apartments, such as showers, are assigned separate RCDs to protect against electrical faults, as suggested in the 2008 IEE wiring regulations. The regulations state that RCD protection must be implemented for all circuits supplying electrical equipment within Zones 0, 1 and 2. In addition, all cables buried in walls surrounding bathrooms must have 30mA RCD protection. For installations where space is limited, the consumer unit features a front sliding door that expands the options of where the unit can be located.  Additionally, the interior space of the consumer unit provides extra space for cabling, created by reducing the size of internal components such as the Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCBs).

Providing maximum flexibility to the whole build, three of ABB’s distribution boards will also be implemented for the installation of circuit breakers and other components, whilst controlling the electrical distribution throughout the site.

The redevelopment of Highbury Stadium is just part of the ambitious regeneration programme for the surrounding area in north London. The ‘Highbury Project Islington’ will transform 60 acres of London N7 and N5 and includes new leisure and retail spaces and, of course, the new home for the club, the state-of-the-art Emirates Stadium.
