| A separate RCD for lighting upstairs? |

Question: Is there a recommendation about which circuits should be fed from alternate RCDs (i.e., should upstairs lights be on a separate RCD, compared with downstairs lights etc? Answer: There is no specific requirement for how circuits should be divided - see Section 314 of the Regulations ( BS7671: 2008), which deals with division of the installation.
Generally, most contractors will put downstairs lights/upstairs sockets on one RCD, and upstairs lights/downstairs sockets on the second RCD, and so on. This will help, as best as possible, against the effects of nuisance tripping.
