A network of recharging points for electrical cars, which could be used to keep vehicles in a green fleet going, is to be considered by a motoring giant and a power company.

General Motors Europe and Ibedrola have signed an agreement to carry out a feasibility study for a recharging infrastructure for plug-in electric vehicles.

It will look at the technical requirements, the integrated marketing and the viability of the plug-in electric cars.

The study will be carried out in Spain and in the UK and both firms will develop actions to assess the optimum viability of electric cars.

Such a network would allow green fleets to travel longer distances instead of returning to base and "at high scale will significantly contribute to increased energy efficiency and environmental protection".

The government recently launched a £100 million programme for promoting electrical vehicles.

Local governments and organisations around the country are to be given electric vehicles to trial and showcase.
