LEDs for general lighting applications

10 November 2008

This November 2008 edition of VoltiBULLETIN covers the topic of Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) for general lighting. Are LEDs ready for this? The answer, today, is yes, LEDs have finally arrived, and the lighting applications they are finding are no longer as niche as they were only a year ago.

The price/performance ratio of LEDs is improving all the time, to the extent that are now beginning to find increasing numbers of lighting applications.

Today, it seems that, while LEDs won't replace incandescents and compact fluorescents (CFLs) in the home for a while yet, LED lighting really is finding many general lighting applications. And the design possibilities are almost endless!

This VoltiBULLETIN relating to LED's has been certified as suitable for CPD purposes by the Construction CPD Certification Service.

...this month's practical snag and its solution from the NICEIC

Making provisions for the future connection of luminaires

An installation must not be energized unless cables are both properly terminated and enclosed.

A snag can easily arise with wall lights, downlighters, and the like.

Consider a new installation where the wall lights have not yet been selected yet it is required to energize the installation to have the other lights operational.

It is not acceptable for an energized cable to emerge from a wall merely terminated in a taped-up connector block. A risk of electric shock exists.

The use of electrical insulating tape as the sole means of enclosure for terminations is not acceptable.
