Mobile phone company Orange is teaming up with WWF France to assess the environmental performance of its products.

An eco-rating system is to be launched across a range of 30 fixed-line and mobile phones in mid-October, with the aim of raising awareness among suppliers and operators as well as consumers.

This eco-rating system is the first of its kind seen in the telecoms industry and Orange hopes it will encourage customers to make responsible purchases.

There will be five indicators that will measure the environmental impact of each product.

These include a 'limitation of dangerous substances' indicator, which manages the number of harmful substances in each product, and an 'energy efficiency' indicator which monitors energy consumption.

There is also a 'CO2 assessment' which measures the quantities of greenhouse gas emissions during the manufacture and transport of a product.

Last month it was announced that Orange had launched the BlackBerry Bold in France, a smartphone with live TV and GPS+ navigation capabilities.
