Question: Could you please define a 'clean earth' for an IT server room? Is it a requirement of BS7671, and why one should be installed if it is a requirement?

Answer: A clean earth is not a defined term in BS 7671. However, IEE Guidance Note 8 'Earthing and Bonding' states that a clean earth is a particular form of functional earthing necessary for the proper functioning of electrical equipment(usually IT or telecoms).

It is a low noise earth in which the level of conducted or induced interference from external sources does not produce an unacceptable incidence of equipment malfunction.

It is recommended that equipment manufacturers own recommendations should be taken for such installation work. IEE Guidance Note 8 provides some limited information on the topic.
