Q & A of the Day - Do I need to replace the consumer unit?

NICEIC

Our Voltimum Experts answer your questions on a daily basis in our Technical Expertise area. This one, concerning an extra socket and whether this would mean replacing the entire consumer unit, is answered by the NICEIC:

Question: If an additional socket outlet or light was to be added to an existing circuit, say in an upstairs bedroom, would the whole consumer unit need replacing to comply with the 17th Edition?

Answer: The proposed alteration/addition only would be required to comply with BS7671 : 2008. However it should be noted that Regulation 131.8 requires verification of the existing arrangements to check that they are satisfactory and suitable for the proposed alteration/addition, including the earthing/bonding arrangements. Also Regulation 633.2 requires, as far as is reasonably practicable, any defects observed in the existing installation to be recorded on the certificate.
