The Langage Power Station, the UK’s first major power station to be built in over five years, has been equipped with Prysmian’s new generation FP Plus cable. The cable has been installed throughout the fire alarm system at the new power station located near Plymouth. A project of this scale and importance called for the highest specification of fire resistant cable to ensure the safety of staff and the local population.

Keith Rendell of Edmundson Electrical supplied 15,000 metres of FP Plus for the project. The new generation cable is manufactured with enhanced Insudite insulation which increases damage resistance creating a highly durable cable. It is fully compliant with all the requirements for enhanced cables approved for fire detection and fire alarm critical signal paths in BS5839-1:2002 enhanced application areas, voice alarm systems to BS5839-8:1998 (Amd 2006) and emergency lighting systems to BS5266-1:2005.
Director Mike Rowley, of Electrical Contracting Services, said,” The cable is really quick to install and easy to terminate. We started installing FP Plus on cable basket, in trunking and conduit in April this year and are well on course to finish on time by December. Besides ease of use, the new generation of FP Plus also satisfied the need for a cable of high specification without being overpriced and availability and delivery has been first rate.”
Owned and operated by UK energy giant Centrica, work began on the facility in 2006, at a cost of £400 million. The gas-fired plant which will power more than 1 million homes is due to open in early 2009 and is billed as one of the cleanest and most efficient power stations in the world.
