The contractors shortlisted to construct enhanced rowing and flatwater canoeing facilities for the London 2012 Games were announced by the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) today.

The Rowing and Flatwater Canoeing events during the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games will take place at the Eton College Rowing Centre at Dorney Lake in Windsor, Berkshire. Set in a 450-acre parkland, the venue currently consists of a 2,200-metre, 8-lane rowing lake, warm-up lakes, and associated competition facilities.

The venue’s existing facilities will be enhanced to provide improved facilities for athlete warm-up and flatwater canoeing events during the 2012 Games. The contract for the construction of the enhanced facilities was put out to tender in May and five companies have now been shortlisted:

  • Morrison Construction Limited
  • Carillion Construction Limited
  • Edmund Nuttall Limited
  • Norwest Holst Limited
  • Balfour Beatty Civil Engineering Limited.

David Higgins, ODA Chief Executive said: 'Eton Dorney is a first-class venue and the enhancements we are delivering will create the best possible facilities for the world’s best athletes to use in 2012. Securing a selection of leading contractors is an important step towards delivering these essential works.'

The contract to deliver the enhancement works at Dorney Lake include:

The installation of a new 50-metre span bridge over a widened entrance to the warm-up lake for two-way vehicular traffic and segregated pedestrian traffic
Construction of a cut-through between the competition rowing lake and the warm-up lakes, with a new bridge over the cut-through
The upgrade of the existing gravel/stone access road up to the competition venue to facilitate construction works.
The contract for the Eton Dorney enhancement works is expected to be awarded in early 2009, with works due to start on site later in 2009.
