Prysmian’s fire performance cable has been used to power the essential life safety systems of the newly completed Athlone Shopping Centre, one of the largest projects of its kind ever undertaken in Ireland.

Precision Cables of Dundalk supplied Prysmian’s FP200 Gold and FP400 fire resistant cables for the project which together made up 15,000 metres of cable. FP200 Gold was installed in the state-of-the art fire alarm and voice evacuation systems as well as the emergency telephone network, disabled refuges and smoke extract switches. FP400 was used to power the smoke extraction fire-fighting system throughout the vast 1500 bay car park, a major task in itself.
Sean Cox of Precision Cables, the sole distributor of Prysmian cable in Ireland, feels confident supplying the cable, he commented: “We have been supplying Prysmian cable for the past 20 years, so we know the cable can be trusted for sizeable developments that attract a large numbers of visitors.”
Contractor Ken Clarke, of Mercury Engineering, in charge of installing both FP200 Gold and FP400 cables, said, “For a project of this size it was essential to use a cable that is strong, but also allows for easy installation. The Prysmian cable we used satisfied both these requirements and was significantly more cost and time effective than others. After using Prysmian cables on this job, I was so impressed I am now using them on other projects throughout Ireland.”
Since opening, Athlone Shopping Centre has filled a major retail gap in the region, with almost 500 000 shoppers passing through its doors in the first ten days alone. Covering some 300 000 sq.ft over two levels, the center is home to more than 70 well known outlets.
