MP told to pay up

The case of the MP and the tradesman he refused to pay has at last been resolved after court time and expense out of all proportion to the £64 bill in question.

MP Brian Donohoe has been ordered to pay up.

The electrician, Dale McNair, of DSM Electrical in Drongan, hailed the court’s decision as a “victory for small business and the working man”.

The Sheriff at Kilmarnock, who at one stage said the case was a “waste of the court’s time”, observed that the judgment raises some “interesting points”, not least that if members of the public call a tradesman to their home, they should expect to pay a call-out charge.

Speaking for SELECT, the trade association for the electrical contracting industry, Newell McGuiness said: “This recognises that tradesmen such as Mr McNair are highly skilled professionals and, as would be the case with professionals in any other field, they deserve to be rewarded adequately for their time and expertise.

“When firms are accepted as members of SELECT, they are bound by a well-established Code of Practice which is monitored by an independent Registration Board and they have to work to SELECT’s exacting standards.

“These standards cover the latest technology, contractual, technical and regulatory matters and, of course, the most up-to-the-minute expertise on safety.

“Clients of SELECT member companies such as DSM Electrical can expect to receive an expert, efficient, timely and safety-conscious service, and SELECT is determined to ensure that this continues to be the case.”
