The NICEIC Approved Contractor scheme has been in operation since 1956 with the aim of protecting everyone who uses electricity from unsafe electrical installations in their homes, places of work and leisure.

Contractors voluntarily register with the scheme and are rigorously assessed to UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation Service) standards. Assessment covers a representative sample of the contractor’s work, their premises, documentation, equipment, and the competence of their key supervisory staff.  Once contractors become registered with NICEIC, they are re-assessed on a regular basis to ensure continued compliance.

The 15,000th company to be registered is Safe at Home, owned by Ian Stevenson. The company was registered solely on NICEIC’s Domestic Installer Scheme, but Ian saw the advantages of the Approved Contractor scheme and decided to undergo the assessments.

“To become an Approved Contractor means I can tender for more business, it enhances my reputation and gives me the satisfaction that my business is recognised as one of the best in the industry,” says Ian.

There are now more than 15,000 Approved Contractors and with a pedigree of over 50 years, the number is growing all the time. To be an Approved Contractor offers peace of mind for specifiers in both the public and private sectors and can win contractors more business.

“The Approved Contractor Scheme has a great heritage and is unrivalled in its reputation,” says Alan Wells, Head of Electrotechnical, NICEIC Group. “It continues to grow and I urge all electrical contractors to consider the benefits of registering with the scheme.”

Industry leading technical advice, publications, products and access to training are just some of the added value benefits of becoming an Approved Contractor. For more details on NICEIC’s Approved Contractor scheme telephone 0870 013 0382 or visit www.niceic.com.
