Since its launch in 2001, the ECA's ZAP initiative has encouraged and helped member firms to implement effective safety measurements. The result has been a massive 49 per cent reduction in RIDDOR-reportable accidents over the last six years. Figures also show a 59 per cent fall in major accidents during the same period.
David Pollock ECA Group CEO comments: "These latest figures are extremely encouraging and underline the continued success of our ZAP initiative. I commend our members for achieving such significant improvements to their safety performance.
"We are already in phase two of the ZAP initiative, which is looking to achieve a 75 per cent reduction in major injuries by 2010. ZAP's progress will continue to be measured through robust accident statistics provided by the JIB and we will continue to update the industry of achievements towards this challenging but highly beneficial target."
The ZAP programme, which was specially commended at the 2007 'Safety and Health Practitioner' awards, aims to drive improvements in all areas of safety performance in the electrical contracting industry.
Through the initiative, the ECA provides free information, publications, events, and best practice workshops for members. As part of its ongoing commitment to reducing accidents, the ECA sets clear targets for improvement to allow effective monitoring and reporting of the industry's performance.
Paul Reeve, health, safety and environment manager at the ECA concludes: "These figures show that there has been a step change in awareness and improved safety management in our industry. Part of our role is to provide members with practical tools to help them manage safety to a high standard, as easily as possible. Our next ZAP output for members - to be launched later this year - will be practical forms that will demystify how to do site-based risk assessments and method statements."
