The Challange
Victoria Square is deemed to be far more than just a shopping centre. This £400 million regeneration project is considered to become the new social and cultural meeting point of Belfast. The lighting effects have been a fundamental element in achieving this vision offering a whole new dimension the city centre.
The Solution
Unveiled for the first time by Master of Ceremonies, celebrity Eamonn Holmes, shoppers are now treated to a dynamic and unusual light show as they wander through the 1.8 hectares multi-use site. As Brian Garrett of ECI Lighting states, “The Victoria Square dome and the LED lighting therein, is visible from many vantage points around Belfast City. The innovative lighting solution has played an enormous part here bringing an exciting theatrical dimension and sense of entertainment to the shopping experience. The stunning dome is the perfect place to see the City by day or by night. If, and when, the centre management decide they would like a new “light show”, this can be affected remotely via an Ethernet control system The spectacular viewing gallery in the dome is one of Belfast’s biggest attractions and some 17.2 million people are expected to visit Victoria Square on average per year placing it in the top ten shopping centres in the UK.”.
The Technology
To achieve these effects, the iColor® MR g2 fixtures were attached to the glazing intersections, or nodes, which made up the dome’s construction. The fixtures are simply individually addressed using the Philips Light System Manager which is an effective software/hardware solution ideally suited for large scale and intricately designed installations such as here at Victoria Square.
The Benefits
Colour - Based on LED technology aesthetically they can generate millions of colours and dynamic effects without gels, filters or mechanical scrollers. Moreover, operationally they require very little maintenance and produce little to no radiated heat.
Multiple Effects - In addition, by means of the Manager’s Light System Engine, an Ethernet-based hardware controller, it is capable of playing a large quantity of light show effects. Thus, the dome can become the backdrop for an artificial skyline with rolling clouds gently passing overhead or add a more dramatic touch by replicating the rise and fall of randomly shaped globules contained within a lava lamp moving horizontally or vertically across the glazing panels. Shopping for the residents of Belfast at least will, without doubt, never be the same again!
