From testing controls and accessories to enjoying annual fancy dress parties, Bart Bulmer has the job of assessing what products meet BSI standards and can be granted the world famous Kitemark®. His cuppa: Coffee, white with one sugar.
A “Hemel lad, born and bred”, Bart has always been interested in engineering and technology.
“I was one of those kids that pulled the wheels off toys to see how they worked,” said Bart.
So it only makes sense that Bart started his career working as an apprentice with British Rail. He also acquired qualifications in electrical craft, electrical technologies and industrial electronics.
After his apprenticeship, Bart worked for a printing machine manufacturer for several years. From here he moved on to joining BSI Product Services as a technician. 28 years later, Bart is still proudly working for BSI in their Controls and Accessories Lab as a BSI Engineer.
“I’ve been learning the ropes since then,” joked Bart. ”I’m now about 80% there.”

Bart’s work varies from day to day, as he thoroughly tests a wide range of controls and accessories products. This includes prototype testing, audit testing and certification testing. These tests are quite extensive and can take several weeks to complete.
When he’s not testing and inspecting, Bart enjoys visiting his “lil’ place in Llani”, also known as Llanidloes, Wales. It is here Bart and his wife relax amongst the breathtaking scenery along with their four mares and foals. Bart recently took part in Llani’s renowned annual Fancy Dress Party that takes place the first Friday of every July. For the festivities, Bart donned a poncho and funny moustache, as he was a Mexican Bandit.
Bart also enjoys tending his garden, where a wide array of foliage, including orange blossoms and honeysuckles, are “overgrown and lovely.”
