| Insulation tester - annual calibration needed? |
|
Question: The NICEIC is saying that I do not need to have my insulation tester calibrated annually, provided that I carry out regular comparison testing on a resistive load. How then do I ensure that the meter continues to output the full 500V DC at 1mA into a 0.5 MegOhm load as specifically required by BS7671?
Output voltage and current may both fall, yet still provide correct resistance values acting as a simple multimeter.
Answer: We would recommend that you contact the NICEIC again to clarify its calibration recommendations. Our understanding is that the NICEIC recommends instrument verification checks in-between calibration. As you have correctly identified, you would need to purchase specific instruments to verify all aspects of your test instruments compliance to BS7671. There are check-boxes on the market that will indicate whether the correct voltage is attained at the relevant resistances but, as far as we are aware, these do not replace an annual calibration.
