MK Electric’s lighting management systems detect energy savings

MK Electric, the UK’s leading manufacturer of wiring devices and accessories, has introduced a comprehensive range of innovative lighting controls – MK Sensors – designed to deliver energy savings and lighting usage management in a wide range of commercial applications.

Lighting represents, on average, up to 40% of a building’s total energy consumption; and also the largest opportunity for energy savings. MK Sensors not only help realise the highest potential savings in energy consumption, and thus to energy bills; but also offer the shortest payback periods when compared to means such as diffuser replacement and lamp type changes.

The MK Sensor range deploys three main types of sensor technology – namely PIR, Microwave and Ultrasonic – in a variety of devices configured for ceiling or corner mounting; as well as long range detection. All products in the MK Sensors range have a built-in photocell, providing occupancy and light level detection. The range is also complemented by a host of accessories and ancillaries – such as programmers and controllers – which combine to make the collection easy to install, easy to understand and easy to use.

Awareness of environmental issues and the need to reduce carbon dioxide emissions has increased considerably in recent years. With various government targets in mind, and the ever-growing issues and concerns around energy consumption, the environment and sustainability; it is now essential that contractors, specifiers and building managers alike appreciate the effect lighting sensors can have on the efficiency and environmental impact of buildings.

Ceiling mounted sensors comprise a choice of Standard PIR, Superior PIR and Microwave Detectors. The Standard PIRs deliver a simple, cost effective solution to detection and can be surface or flush mounted. Incorporating passive photocells, the sensors offer detection ranges up to six metres, and off delay of 20 minutes and are ideal for ceiling heights up to three metres.

Superior PIRs offer a similar six metre range, but also incorporate an active photocell which turns lights off when sufficient natural light is available, thus providing extra savings. Some Superior PIRs also incorporate regulating photocells, reacting to external light sources by dimming lights up or down when used with a suitable ballast. Superior PIRs have a variable off delay of between five and 35 minutes. Furthermore, they are remotely programmable and are dimmable with either analogue or digital ballasts.

The high performance, super sensitive microwave detectors are ideal for ceiling heights up to four metres. With a built-in regulating photocell, the microwave sensors have the option of six independent ‘scenes’, making it ideal for conference rooms or large meeting rooms which are often partitioned. Microwave sensors offer off delays of between five and 60 minutes.

Corner mounted units are directionally adjustable and feature a unique external manual control feature. Two independent sensitivity controls provide flexibility in use, while the incorporated photocell takes account of all light conditions. The high performance Standard Ultrasonic corner unit has a detector range of up to six metres in open areas and 13 metres in corridors; and an off delay period of between five and 15 minutes.

The superior performance Microwave corner detector has an effective detection range of up to 20m; and a versatile off period delay ranging between 0 and 20 minutes.

Both ceiling and corner mounted sensors come in a choice of configurations allowing a variety of options between technologies and flush or surface mounting to be specified.

The long range microwave detectors in the MK Sensor range are powerful, versatile devices that are particularly suitable for long corridor runs; or large open-plan spaces – whether in schools, hotels or office environments.

Offering a choice of box or flush mounted, or dual or single circuit unit options; the robust designs are intended to resist abuse in public environments and are available with ranges of 30 and 60 metres; both with time setting features of between 0 and 30 minutes.

The sensors are accompanied by a range of accessories and ancillaries, including a choice of controllers and programmers. The standard programmer can be used to remotely set the time delay, and select semi- or fully automatic operation of all ceiling-mounted sensors via an array of 12 DIL switches. This remote programming tool allows commissioning and re-commissioning of sensors to be carried out with virtually no disturbance to the buildings occupants. In addition, a Digital Programmer is also available which is designed to be used with Superior PIRs, ceiling mounted Microwave Sensors and Universal Photocells. The Digital Programmer has additional functionality: with the settings being chosen from a menu and transferred instantaneously to the PIR or detector, or settings can be downloaded from one sensor and uploaded to another.

The MK Sensors range broadens the MK Wiring Devices portfolio further, offering solutions for compliance to Part L of the Building Regulations, as well as complimentary products to the existing market leading portfolio of Wiring Devices, Cable Management and Circuit Protection.
