BEAMA endorses Electra report

0000-00-00
BEAMA

Following its just-published (June ’08) Climate Change White Paper, BEAMA has endorsed the conclusions of the Electra policy group’s competitiveness report (June ’08), which highlights that with 2020 targets set, EU governments will need the help of the electrical manufacturing and electronics industry to reach the required goals. Namely, less CO2 emissions, more energy efficiency and renewables.

The Electra policy group’s (industry, EU-Commission, unions) report follows a year of intense work co-chaired by Commission vice president Verheugen and Orgalime past president Krubasik.

BEAMA marketing director Howard Porter agrees with the report’s conclusion that it is achievable: “It is essential EU and national politicians create the right conditions for the Electra industry and its customers.

”The report concludes that for the industry to remain at the forefront of technology and competitiveness in a fast changing global environment, along with national governments and EU-institutions, the focus must be on regulation, enforcement, investment and awareness.

“There are considerable opportunities for reducing energy usage throughout the electricity supply chain. The BEAMA consultation White Paper and the Electra report highlight how these reductions can be achieved. Both aim to stimulate the electrical industry’s response to climate change, whist improving competiveness and wider economic benefits.”
