The electrotechnical industry is recognizing the fast pace of technical and regulatory change with a major updating and restructuring of one of its most important trade qualifications.
From the end of the year, the requirements for achieving Approved Electrician status – one of the most important career milestones for skilled tradesmen in Scotland – will take a fresh approach, reflecting the considerable advances in the industry over the past 13 years.
The changes come after a consultation period in which the Scottish Joint Industry Board initiated a review of existing arrangements and asked the Scottish Electrical Charitable Training Trust as managing agents to scrutinize recommendations.
In essence, the existing requirements for Approved status will be structured differently, with greater emphasis being placed on health and safety competence and the satisfaction of client demand for workforce qualification and development. The previous requirement to keep a Log Book will be abandoned.
This new route to the “gold standard” of Approved status is designed to add value to both working electricians and employers. Its enhancement of skills will create better standards of competence and safety throughout this highly complex and technical industry and demonstrate continuing professional development and awareness of technical advances.
It is expected to lead to greater retention of skilled workforces as a result of improved career prospects and status.
Newell McGuiness, director of the Scottish Joint Industry Board and managing director of SELECT said: “This dynamically re-aligns the Scottish Apprenticeship and progression to Approved status with industry needs and augments the ownership felt by employers towards the training process.”
John Quigley, regional secretary for the trade union Unite, said: “This gives electricians another string to their bow and opens doors to career development and advancement.”
