When vandals removed the bitumen from the roof of Scottish Water's Castle Hill pumping station near Glasgow, allowing rainwater to enter the building, the result was a 3.3kV switchboard damaged beyond economic repair.

In response to a request from Byzak, the main contractor for refurbishment work at the pumping station, engineers from Schneider Electric, Services & Projects were soon on site to assess the damage and evaluate the requirements for new equipment.
As a result, a completely new switchboard was supplied by Merlin Gerin, a brand of Schneider Electric, which not only provided all of the functionality of the old board, but also featured much more convenient and compact fully integrated construction.
The new board comprised three motor feeders, each rated at 800kW and two transformer feeders, all from the Merlin Gerin Motorpact range, together with a power factor correction section. A main incomer and a bus-section were provided, using metalclad demountable vacuum circuit breakers from the Merlin Gerin GenieEvo range.
Also provided were two 50kVA transformers and, because of the flexibility of the Merlin Gerin equipment, it proved possible to house these entirely within the board, rather than mounting them separately, as had previously been done. This new arrangement for the transformers not only saved valuable space on site, it also made installation faster and easier, as well as eliminating the need for external cabling to link the transformers to the board.
In order to facilitate the refurbishment of the pumping station and, as far as possible, maintain its functionality, all of the new equipment from Schneider Electric had to be delivered to a strict pre-planned schedule. By calling on the resources of its large UK-based manufacturing facility for medium voltage equipment, the company was able to meet all of the scheduled delivery dates with ease, ensuring the successful on-time completion of the project.
