SELECT has joined forces with another three major UK associations and created a new Charter, specifically designed to stem the threat from counterfeit and non-compliant electrical products.

At a recent industry event, the presidents of the four major associations, including SELECT President Douglas Geddes officially signed-up to the Charter, effectively committing members to refuse trading in counterfeit or non-compliant products.

The electrical industry on the whole views the Charter as being a major move forwards in combating counterfeiters and it is hoped that a unified front encompassing the associations working together on practical and effective solutions, will help to stamp out counterfeit, sub-standard and non-compliant electrical products from the UK market.

Douglas Geddes commented: “This industry initiative represents a further important step towards protecting householders across the whole of the UK.  By working together with the rest of the supply chain, we are stemming the flow of counterfeit products into the British market.”

The other organisations which have joined forces with SELECT are the EDA (Electrical Distributors Association), ECA (Electrical Contractors Association) and BEAMA, the British Electrotechnical and Allied Manufacturers' Association.

BEAMA CEO Dave Dossett added that all those in the electrical supply chain should be more vigilant.

“Suppliers must beware - if you’re offered products at ‘too good to be true prices’ they’re likely to be inferior quality fakes or products that don’t comply with the relevant standards.

“This Charter confirms the electrical product industry’s will to encourage the development within the marketplace of concrete actions between members of all signatories.

”We’re sure other associations will also sign the Charter, and that eventually such a commitment could form part of contract conditions between companies.”
