At a business event in Perth this afternoon the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) Chairman, John Armitt will urge Scottish companies to make the most of the opportunities that will flow from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) and London Organising Committee (LOCOG) expect to allocate over £6bn of work as part of an estimated 75,000 future business opportunities covering direct contractors and their supply chains over the coming years.
Speaking at the Constructing Excellence event in Perth, supported by Scottish Enterprise and Highlands and Islands Enterprise, ODA Chairman John Armitt said: 'London 2012 is much more than a fantastic festival of sport. It is a great opportunity for Scottish business that can deliver real short and long term benefits. We want to help companies in Scotland make the most of the opportunities that lie ahead.'
Even at this early stage over two-thirds of the companies that have won ODA contracts are small and medium sized, five being based in Scotland. More Scottish companies are already supplying our contractors. For example, Dunfermline-based Mason Land Surveys have been working directly for the ODA, surveying the Olympic Park, Kilsyth-based company Ritchies, have been testing materials for one of the ODA"e;s contractors cleaning up the land and Glasgow-based NORD Architecture has designed an electrical substation to be built by EDF Energy in the Olympic Park (images available from the ODA Press Office).
The ‘London 2012 Business Network"e; was launched last month to help many more Scottish companies compete for London 2012 business opportunities direct with London 2012 or with suppliers in its supply chain.
The Network has three component parts; essential information on upcoming opportunities and how to supply London 2012; business events; and the new ‘CompeteFor"e; service, a business ‘dating agency"e; that will match companies to thousands of opportunities supplying London 2012 contractors. Up to a fifth of London 2012 supply chain opportunities are expected to go through CompeteFor and over 120 Scottish companies have already registered on the system.
